One dress four ways. Easy tips for effortless style!

It’s a horrible thing we have started doing, this whole Instagramming and snap chatting OOTD pictures. It adds layers of doubt in the decision to wear an outfit again!

If it has a picture taken and uploaded somewhere, I tend to let the picture do it’s social media time and more before even considering wearing it again, and when I do, it must be with a completely different audience.

Stress.

In all that self-created drama, let’s look at wearing a simple maxi dress repeatedly and stylishly! If you have a plain dress you know you can do oh-so-much with it, but here is a dress I love and the print is quite unique which not only makes it amazing but also makes it so difficult to repeat!

Layering is everything:

No rocket science there, throwing on a shrug or a jacket you know will change the look drastically. These days girls are wearing t-shirts over maxi dresses and using the dress as skirts, go figure! And, I was hesitating to put on a sweatshirt over my dress even while freezing. Hmm. Jugni issues. Layering makes styling an outfit easy, play with lengths, fabrics, styles too.

Added a simple cotton shirt and tied it up at the waist, very art-class look feels nai?

IMG_3023-Edit

The big messy hair is all thanks to our ever so unpredictable monsoon weather. yes, I’m kind of Monica Geller-ish with my hair when it gets humid. IMG_3032-Edit

Keeping the accessories same, I tried a dress on dress. Denim over a cotton maxi might sound off but actually looked pretty cool. It not only changed the look of my maxi but also allowed me to wear my denim dress again. See the denim dress post here.

How about a semi-formal jacket? Spunk up your maxi dress look with a full close button up or zip up jacket and change your look completely!

Jewellery is everything! While trying to establish a particular look, the accessories you pair together really adds up to your look. I tried two different themes with dull gold and oxidised silver too. Keeping in mind the print of the maxi dress with those little coins can be turned into something ethnic, I liked how it added up. Do you?

The top 3 Desi Looks you need to add to your wardrobe, If you haven’t already.

You can do denims, skirts and dresses but nothing slays like an authentic Indian/ traditional look. Whether you’re the only one going design in college or adapting these into a routine family gathering, these are the 3 must have looks you need to try asap!

Kurta- Pallazzos

If you haven’t guessed it yet, I am obsessed with palazzo pants, they make me look taller and give me a feeling of being the most elegantly dressed when in a crowd! The trend started early 2015 and looks like it’s here to stay. Mix and match with interesting prints and colours to create different looks. They are so comfortable and effortlessly stylishly you might consider ditching all other forms of bottoms completely!

Patiala Salwar:

Nothing says casual desi like patiala suits, they define easy, functional style to me. Especially after Tanu weds Manu, I see myself turning to a patiala suit more often than not these days.

Jugni Tip: You need to find the right tailor to give you a real patiala salwar, it’s not as easy as it looks to have those perfect pleats in a hot fit, you might have to struggle with a few trials. But I suggest don’t settle till you feel full punjabi kuddie. Also, preferably get one from the north! I got this beautiful fabric from Ahmedabad for as less as INR 90 per metre and the short fitted kurta made me feel like Alia Bhatt from Humpty Sharma! If you don’t have this set in your wardrobe you are certainly missing out on a classic.

Kurti- Leggings

This is a cheat salwar kameez, or a chudidar kurta’s modernised version. It’s available everywhere you go and is so easy to carry. All the big brands have made multiple styles of kurtas ready to buy for us. From the A-lines, to the straight fits, the asymmetrical to a simple slit one like this they can all add interesting elements in your wardrobe. The gungroo on this kurta made me buy it without a second thought, also, the chudidar sleeves are so pretty nai?

Jugni Tip: Since leggings are skin tight, the length of the kurta should be below knee length or it can look weird, also colours like beige or skin tone for a legging will make it look like you aren’t wearing any, so be careful!

The not so routine- everyday look you must try! #WrapThat

I’m pretty confident that all you girlies have a printed wrap around skirt in that wardrobe. Either you received it as a gift, or bought it at a fair or just ordered one cause you felt that you could rock this look.

Well, if you have been struggling what to team it with just like I was, I decided to go dead-basic. T-shits just about fit into any look, you can layer the look with a long cape, you could even wear the skirt with a nice plain kurta. The options are endless, here is one such option that you can easily carry to your next work day or college too.

Wrap around skirts tend to suit most body types, they are easy to wear and really comfortable if you have to run errands all day. Adding desi accessories and kolhapuri chappals added an interesting blend to the look for the day. Go ahead and #WrapThat

Als, i wore the same skirt with a plain white tee while on a vacation with family, find a bonus picture with my Mumma ji below.

Tell me how you like such basic looks, should we do more?

Tee-Series: Styling a round neck t-shirt, again.

Taking cue from our last post in the same series that you can read here; I am still obsessing over the 3 uber cool doodled t-shirts that I got designed by The Filmy owl (Angel Bedi) from PosterGully.com

I was absolutely overwhelmed when so many of you sent me photos wearing the same t-shirts! Yay, blogger feel. Keeping the core thought the same, we cannot do with them can’t do without. Round neck basic t-shirts or chest print t-shirts are not just to work out or sleep in, they need to be worn out. You need to surprise yourself at how stylish you can make this wardrobe staple look. Watch and learn 😛

It’s not difficult to understand when you add crisp white denims and heeled footwear you are definitely going strong on your style game. I have worn the same t-shirt with shorts as well as harem pants and I swear the whole look becomes unique with different shoes and pants. Also, makeup and accessories. The bag, shoes, red lips, earrings all add up to this look and makes it wearable to a dinner or evening wear.

#MaaKaWardrobe Here’s what you can do with that gorgeous silk saree.

When it comes to classic pieces, I find all my answers in Mumma’s wardrobe. From the most epic dupattas to authentic embroidery and fabrics that stay forever there is everything!

I have been eyeing Maa’s saree collection for the longest time, and when I finally got my hands on this one I knew I wanted to create magic with it. So, out of the many things you can do with your mom’s silk saree you can also convert it into a beautiful pleated skirt/lehenga. Just like you’ll see in the pictures below. This classic digital print, pure silk, gold and sea green piece is my Nani Maa’s treasure passed on to my mother and is now mine. By adding a pop of blue in a beautiful raw silk, I tried to put in a little life onto the colour which made me look a little pale when draped as a saree.

The saree has so much legacy attached to it, I almost feel like I’m wearing years of family style with each step in my new skirt. Crop top and skirt trend looks like it’s here to stay, hence it just fits well with fashion today created by a piece from the 60’s. What do you think of it? Do you have an old treasure from #MaaKaWardrobe that you would like to revamp? Write into us and let’s brainstorm together!

How to repeat a dress, guilt free & stylishly

Apart from working on my Forever 21 sale haul, this post is going to help you with easy style hacks to wear your favourite dress to death.

We’re all guilty of owning a dress that we just cannot get enough of, to a club, to a brunch, to college, to office, even to bed if we could. This dress is your turn to whatever the occasion maybe. Having said that, I was delighted to find this easy-peasy casual dress at the recent F21 monsoon sale. Priced at only INR 500 (after discount) I didn’t see a reason for me not to buy it, infact i almost picked two. OK. Enough rambling, getting to the point. Working on this post made me realise the power of layering and accessories. So simple, and how unthankful we are to all the things that can completely turn around a look from elegant lady to school-girl.

Here are FIVE ways to repeat a basic dress, guilt free and stylishly.

1. Add on: A printed cape.

Printed capes are big right now, wear a pair of shorts and a tshirt and throw on a floor length printed cape, wear it on a dress or even a short cape on a maxi dress. So pretty, you have to try it. And the tassels just got me on this one!

2. Add on: A light shirt.

So honestly i just loved this shirt, but it doesn’t fit me. I mean the buttons just won’t shut, so instead of giving it a slow death at the back of my wardrobe, here’s what i did. Threw it on, and voila, look so pretty, let down or tied-up. It adds so much character to the dress, with the right bag i could wear it anywhere i like.

3. Add on: A Backpack.

Dressing down an outfit is my favourite task. Took-over this checkered backpack from my kid sister’s wardrobe. Duh. Elder sisters give you no choice. Also laid my hands on cutesy tiara print socks and monochrome shoes to go with the bag. And the minion sipper just felt so right. Ideal for a picnic this look just took me back to teenage.

Also notice how the bag drops and I go from full school girl to tuition girl swag. C’mon you know you opened your hair, pulled down your socks and threw the bag on one shoulder when you went to classes! Especially girls school. *ahem*

4. Add on: A lace-y cape.

Taking the whole look to date night level was my borrowed lace-cape and suede heels. The black made just a drastic contrast to the dress, that it helped me up the look to an almost formal level. Heels also took the casual-ness of the dress out of the picture.

5. Add on: Jeggings.

Nobody remembers a dress worn as a top worn as a dress! You get it, confuse them by wearing it as a tunic top on skinny jeans or jeggings. Drape a scarf to make the top also look a little detailed, you could also wear a statement neckpiece, here i have worn my cape as a scarf and it works perfectly thanks to the tassels. Hai na simple? Try toh karo, your wardrobe is full of surprises and you don’t even know it.

Comfortable Fashion #FTW

You know how most days are torn between correct postures, mild smiles, behaved mannerisms, crisp clothes and slouching shoulders, loud disturbing laughter with snorts, t-shirts and shorts. I’m pretty sure we’d all love the second part.

On days with back to back meetings or running errands, sometimes the most rewarding feeling is to get into a t-shirt later and chill. So I believe clothes have this magical power to transform your mood and how you feel. Like when I put on a blazer I feel like a powerful person, and when I wear a LBD i feel sexy, so when I put on a t-shirt/ casual top i feel comfortable and at ease.

Keeping that in mind I was on a hunt to find a t-shirt/ top that just kept me feeling at ease. Quite predictably it ended at Forever 21. I found the ideal top, one I went out drinking in, one I met a prospective client for coffee in and one that I can spend all day in cause of that ultra comfy fit. So who would ever think a baggy top like this one can look so chic?

I suggest you hunt these tight sleeved lose bodied tops and haul them for all seasons, they are cute and snuggly and elegant and stylish. Yeh roz nahi hota. You can style this as per where you are going to be wearing it, tuck it in with shorts or palazzos and make them uber casual. Wear it with skinny fit pants or jeggings for semi formal look. Go for block heels that are so in right now just like the ones in the pictures, or even pretty blingy ballerinas for that cute girly feel. Change the make up accordingly to make it casual or formal. Do multiple things with one piece of clothing, you’ll feel good and be able to shop more confidently too.

How to nail the desi look, always.

If there is ever one particular look that I will always be sure of, it is the desi look.

Rarely can you go wrong with a good kurta and leggings, top it with a bindi and you are all set. The ideal bahu look, or meri-shaadi-karado look or simply a Piku inspired look will leave you surprised with its ease and simplicity. Each body type can flaunt a particular kind or drape of a kurta. The quintessential chudidaar-kurta-duppatta took a much needed turn when it upgraded to kurta and leggings, with or mostly without dupatta it’s sure to make you look formal and adarsh all at once.

Currently the market trend is super long straight fit kurtas, those that go upto your ankles with leggings barely visible. Anarkalis are on their way out and are making appearances only at weddings or occasions. Kurta with Palazzo pants is also an interesting trend that not only elongates your whole look but also adds so much elegance to your style! We are hoping to do a post on that soon. Jooties, Kolhapuris, two strapped chappals or small heels work well with this kind of a look. I’m wearing Kolhapuri with wedge heels which help me make the look a little semi formal and better posture is guaranteed with the comfy heel!

Wear it to a routine work day or even a date to give those pants and tops a break and your onlookers a pleasant surprise. Accessorise it with tiny jhumkis or lots of bangles and you’re sure to be a head-turner. Little girls on their traditional day at school, girls in college, or even your mum is seen sporting this look with equal panache and grace. It’s so comfortable that you could do absolutely anything in it. (Have you seen aunties jumping in a pool with kurti and leggings – umm don’t do that ok?) Also I introduced my Dadi Ma with leggings and she loves how wearable and sturdy they are, with the fabric not tearing, the fitting almost always perfect and no strings to be tied. Safe to say it’s a fashion element fit for all ages.

Make it a part of your routine, you’ll be surprised how less you need to work on this look to look fabulous. Are you as #DesiLook inspired as I am? Tell me in comments below, also share it with your girlfriend who rocks this style!
